MEDICAL GRADE CO2
Some of the many current medical uses of CO2 gas include use for insufflation during a variety of endoscopic procedures (e.g., uterotubal, CT colonoscopy, etc.); use as an alternative to iodinated contrast agents during diagnostic angiography and vascular interventions in both the arterial and venous circulation; and use for transient respiratory stimulation and encouragement of deep breathing and coughing to prevent or treat atelectasis.
In some procedures, such as diagnostic angiography, relatively small amounts of CO2 are used and low pressure delivery is necessary. In the hospital setting, CO2 gas is commonly provided in large tanks or pressurized canisters which require special safety precautions; however, in some medical settings physicians would prefer not to maintain large tanks of pressurized CO2 on premises, and desire a convenient delivery method for small volumes of CO2 under low pressure.
